About us

With over 35 years experience in French polishing, I first completed my apprenticeship with Andrew Thomson & Company Furniture Makers of Glasgow as a young man. I obtained my City & Guilds, and also the White National Certificate in French Polishing. Further to completion of my apprenticeship, I was promoted to Foreman of French polishing within the Company, going on to be awarded the Gavin Benbo Scholarship for Restoration, a prize awarded to only one French polisher in the UK each year.

I started Furniture Care/ Period Homes, my own family business in 1989, employing my son as the first apprentice. Furniture Care/Period Homes provides French polishing and antique restoration on all articles of furniture, and on areas of the home such as staircases, wall panelling, wooden floors, and bay windows. Why restore your antique furniture?

Many people have furniture within their homes that has been passed on to them by beloved relatives. Why not restore these pieces back to their original. They may remind you of your youth or the person you loved who gave it to you. Many old items of furniture also hold sentimental and treasured memories and should be treated with care. When restoring furniture, we first strip the old polish from the piece carefully by hand. This is to uncover the original wood underneath, which has continued to mature and maintain its natural colour. When we re-polish your article, you can select an authentic shade which will compliment the character of the piece. Many people assume that if furniture is dark brown and discoloured it cannot be restored, however, it is actually only the old fashioned polish which has deteriorated. As outlined above, these pieces can be made to look beautiful again with our knowledge and expertise.

We are dedicated to providing a high standard of customer service. Many of our customers have used our services for a number of years due to our quality of our work and our excellent reputation. All furniture restored and work completed is guaranteed to your satisfaction.

We cover all areas of Glasgow including the West End, Pollokshields, Bearsden, Bridge of Weir, and Kilmalcom.
